Presenting Yourself with Impact |
||||||||
One avoidable pitfall, from which many capable presenters find themselves crawling, is the creation and distribution of boring and ineffectual handout material. Many presenters who are PowerPoint savvy nevertheless make the mistake of limiting their creativity to their PowerPoint presentation slides. While it is true that visual slides help convey your message, your handout package should be viewed as an integral part of the presentation. Much of what you want your participants or clients to recall can be distributed through effective handouts and print materials. Unfortunately, what seems to be the norm in just about every industry is the use of the PowerPoint print feature that allows slides to be printed as a handout in a number of numerical configurations. Although the printed slide sheet seems like a good idea, it isn’t. A rather unfortunate circumstance is that the creators of long presentations usually rely on the six slides per page handout which leaves no space for taking notes, while shorter presentations utilize the option of three slides per printed page. Although this does permit participants to take notes on the handout page, the reality is that most people don’t do that. Furthermore, for those rare individuals who make use of the space to jot down a few notes, odds are they are not likely to review their notes again. Nor are they likely to pass on their slide sheet handout to someone else who may have had an interest in the presentation but was unable to attend. Michelle Newlands |
